2nd Gen Tacoma with TRD Pro Wheels

2nd Gen Tacoma with TRD Pro Wheels

Depending on your taste, a set of TRD Pro wheels can look amazing on a 2nd gen Tacoma. What I like about them is that since they’re factory wheels, you can easily order them from Toyota.

Toyota’s Racing Development (TRD) is the company’s racing division that’s been helping enthusiasts get more performance from their vehicles for over 60 years. TRD Wheels go through ride, handling and strength endurance testing to ensure they meet TRD standards so you know you’re getting a tough set off wheels.

Depending on the wheels on your 2nd gen Taco, you may need different lug nuts for TRD Pro wheels to fit properly. Otherwise, an upgrade should be a snap.

TRD Pro Black Alloy Flow Form Wheels

These TRD Pro Black Flow Form wheels will certainly update the style of your 2nd gen Tacoma.

First introduced on the Toyota 4Runner in 2021, these TRD Pro Black Allow Flow Form wheels are a great way to incorporate your own style into your 2nd gen Tacoma. They’re stronger than the previous ones with a beefier, more aggressive spoke pattern while maintaining the TRD family design language.

Black wheels suit a wide variety of off roading vehicles in a wide variety of body colors. But if you’re unsure about how black wheels will look on your Taco, then you’ll be happy to know that Toyota also makes the TRD Flow Form wheels in matte gray. But no matter which color you choose, this wheel has an appealing aggressive design that’s right at home on the Tacoma. And the red TRD logo on the center cap provides excellent contrast to the monochromic color of both wheels.

Not only will the offset give your Tacoma a more rugged appearance. But you’ll feel more balanced on the trails than with the stock Tacoma rims.

Matte Black TRD 17-inch Pro Wheels

These Matte Black TRD 17-inch Pro wheel are popular for the pro series and off-roading and they're sure to look great on your 2nd gen Tacoma.

The factory TRD design is hot right now. This means you’re going to want to look out for counterfeits. One way you can tell if you’re getting an authentic TRD wheel is by looking for the Toyota stamping and part number on the wheel itself. These are the most popular OEM TRD wheels for the pro series and off-roading. And they’re pretty lightweight, which makes them excellent for rock climbing.

Part of the reason is because they’re designed to accommodate the best offset for brake clearance. These matte black TRD 17-inch Pro wheels have been available as an option since 2015. It has a concave design that meets at the wheel hub which gives it a rugged three-dimensional look and a deeper feeling of depth than the Flow Form wheels.

Plus, you’re getting the added peace of mind that comes knowing that these are TRD certified wheels. They are generally made of aluminum alloy, which makes them lighter, able to dissipate heat better and they provide better rigidity.

Matte Gray TRD 17-inch Pro Wheels

These Matte Gray TRD 17-inch Pro wheels demonstrate Toyota's prowess in creating wheels with an authentic off-road look that maintain an OEM feel. They sure to look great on your 2nd gen Tacoma.

But if you’re not that crazy about black wheels or you want your wheels to stand out. Toyota also makes the TRD Pro wheels in matte gray. The design of the TRD Pro wheels demonstrates how masterful Toyota is when it comes to thinking outside the box to create wheels that maintain an OEM feel while delivering an authentic off-road look.

Toyota’s TRD truck and SUV wheels typically have an 11-inch backspacing. Not to be confused with offset. More backspacing means the wheels are closer to the suspension and brakes. Less backspacing means that the wheels are further away from the suspension and brakes, which leads to less rubbing.

Similarly, a lower offset means that your wheels will stick out more. A higher offset means your wheels will stick out less. Paying attention to backspacing and offset helps maintain balance when taking corners on or off the trails. This is why I prefer going with TRD rims for my 4Runner and Tacoma. It eliminates the guess work that comes with choosing an aftermarket wheel.

TRD Bronze Wheels

Bronze wheels look fantastic. And this TRD Bronze wheel will look fantastic on your 2nd gen Tacoma.

And if you really want to stand out, get the TRD Bronze wheels. Nothing changes a vehicle’s appearance quite as dramatically as a set of bronze wheels. If you want to give your 2nd gen an extreme makeover, I can’t think of any other TRD wheel that will do it as effectively. While they look really good on neutral-colored vehicles. I think they can look easily as good on a blue or red Tacoma.

Don’t get me wrong, a black wheel can look sleek and stealthy if not downright luxurious. But they have the bad habit of disappearing into the wheel well. Bronze wheels, however, can give your Tacoma a bit of warmth without looking over the top. That’s why as someone that likes to see all the intricate details and architecture of a well-designed wheel, on some builds I prefer a bronze wheel.

To my mind, Subaru was the first manufacturer to bring bronze wheels into the mainstream. Hats off to Toyota for continuing this trend.

TRD Rock Warrior (Bead-Lock Style) Forged Wheels

Although the bead-lock isn't real on these TRD Rock Warrior Forged wheels. These wheels will make your 2nd gen Tacoma look even more rugged.

Spoiler alert: those aren’t real bead-locks, which means you can take it off. But if you’ve had them on your Tacoma for a while, then decide to take them off. Don’t be surprised to find the area of the wheel where the bead-lock rim was scuffed and beat up.

TRD Forged wheels incorporate aluminum material which has a refined grain structure to produce an even stronger wheel. So, naturally, the TRD Rock Warrior (Bead-Lock) Forged wheels are the most off-road capable wheels out of all the TRD OEM rims Toyota makes. And they’re lightweight which makes it perfect for off-roading.
