4th Gen 4Runner with 5th Gen Wheels

4th Gen 4Runner with 5th Gen Wheels

The most important part of choosing wheels for your Toyota 4Runner is knowing the type of build you have in mind.

I’ve been a 4Runner fanboy ever since I saw Tiffani Thiessen’s ride in 1995 – it was a green 2nd gen 4Runner with a tan interior.

To tell the truth, there isn’t a generation of 4Runner I don’t like. I even like the first gen which was basically a Toyota Hilux with a camper shell.

If you’re like me, you don’t like the typical aftermarket rims on 4Runners. Especially when Toyota offers many good looking, high value 5th gen wheel options that look beautiful on 4th generation 4Runners.

SR5 Wheels

While kind of plain looking on the 5th gen 4Runner, the SR5 rims look incredible on the 4th gen 4Runner.

These are the stock wheels you get on a 5th generation SR5 4Runner. If your 4th gen is more boulevard cruiser than mountain goat and you’re just looking for a subtle change. Then this is the option for you. While I think they make the 5th gen look plain-Jane, they really dress-up the 4th generation 4Runner.

Unlike other manufacturers where a wheel design for their lower model option can be found on numerous products. Toyota designed this wheel specifically for the SR5. So, it doesn’t share this look with any other vehicle in the family. The concave design will lend your 4th gen an almost regal, high-end look.

Limited Wheels

The Limited wheels on the 5th gen 4Runner looks just as upscale on the 4th generation.

Speaking of a high-end look. I’ve seen these wheels on 4th gen 4Runners quite a bit. And why not? They’re the subtle change you’re looking for if you’re feeling tentative about new wheels for your 4Runner.

It gives the SUV an unmistakably luxurious appeal no matter which generation you bolt it on. If your ride has a lot of chrome, these wheels won’t look out of place. Just keep in mind that they are large.

In fact, they’re the largest OEM wheels that Toyota makes for the 4Runner. While they’re not suited for off-roading. These are great rims for city driving, picking up groceries and the like.

TRD Offroad Premium Wheels

If you want a 5th gen 4Runner TRD Wheel for your 4th gen that still looks upscale, these are definitely the ones to get.

Okay. Now we get into Toyota’s TRD Wheels. TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Wheels go through ride, handling and strength endurance testing to ensure it meets TRD standards so you know you’re getting a tough set off wheels – perfect for off-roading. And I think these rims look especially fantastic on a 4th gen 4Runner.

It’s probably because the silver chrome finish gives it more of an upscale look than the aluminum on the SR5 wheels.

If you’ve accented your 4Runner with chrome trim, these seven spoke wheels add a splash of sophistication to the flash while protecting your fourth gen 4Runner from looking gaudy.

TRD Pro Black Alloy Flow Form Wheels

The TRD Pro Black Alloy Flow Form Wheels were new for the 5th generation 4Runner. And now you can get them for your 4th gen 4Runner.

Toyota did something inspired for the 5th generation 4Runner. This is the generation when the company introduced the TRD Flow Form Wheels to the 4Runner lineup. Along with a new color and tougher shocks, it’s among the mild updates Toyota made to the fifth generation 4Runner since its introduction in 2009.

The wheels are stronger than the last ones with an even beefier, more aggressive spoke pattern while maintaining the TRD family design language. And I think these wheels are heads and tails way better looking than any aftermarket option you could get for your fourth gen if that serious off-roader look is what you’re after.

Matte Black TRD 17-inch Pro Wheels

These Matte Black TRD 17-inch Pro Wheels are the most popular rims on 5th 4Runners, and they look pretty awesome on 4th gens too.

These ones have been available as an option for the fifth generation 4Runner since 2015. Like the SR5 wheels, the concave design that meets at the wheel hub gives it a rugged three-dimensional look and a deeper feeling of depth.

If you want to take your fourth gen 4Runner off roading, the TRD Pro Wheels are the most popular OEM rims on a 4Runner for a reason. They’re designed to accommodate the best offset for brake clearance. And they also have a good weight for rock climbing. Plus, you’re getting the added peace of mind of knowing that these are TRD certified wheels.

Matte Gray TRD 17-inch Pro Wheels

If you don't like the look of the Matte Black TRD 17-inch Pro Wheels, Toyota also makes it Matte Gray which will look nice on your 4th 4Runner.

But if you’re like me and you’re not much of a fan of that murdered out look on your fourth generation 4Runner. Toyota also produces these wheels in matte gray just for people like us.

I happen to think this color looks especially good on Imperial Jade Mica (which is a green color), Nautical Blue Metallic and even Pacific Blue Metallic, Dorado Gold Pearl and Driftwood Pearl 4th gen 4Runners.

The wheels demonstrate just how masterful Toyota is when it comes to thinking outside the box to create wheels that maintain an OEM feel while delivering an authentic off-road look.

TRD Bronze Wheels

Bronze wheels make a bold statement on any vehicle. And these TRD Bronze Wheels from the 5th gen Toyota 4Runner are sure to set your 4th gen apart from the crowd.

Don’t take my word for it, just take a look at these wheels! Bronze wheels have mostly stayed out of the reach of OEMs.

I first noticed them on WRXs in rally races. So, kudos to companies like Subaru and now Toyota for working to bring them into the mainstream.

Nothing changes a vehicle’s appearance quite as dramatically as a set of bronze wheels. They certainly make a bold statement. If you want to give your 4th gen an extreme makeover, nothing will make it stand out quite like a set of bronze wheels.

No one will ever confuse your 4Runner with theirs. And since these are TRD rated, you can totally take your bronze shoed 4Runner out on the trails.

TRD Rock Warrior (Bead-Lock Style) Forged Wheels

While these aren't 5th gen Toyota 4Runner rims, they are TRD certified. And they will make your 4th gen 4Runner look off-road ready.

These aren’t 5th gen 4Runner wheels, per-se. Instead, they belong to the second-generation Tundra. But I’ve seen them on 4th gen 4Runners.

In fact, these are the rims that started this journey for me. These are the most off-road capable wheels out of all the OEM rims Toyota makes for the 4Runner.

A forged wheel is a term I recognize from the world of imports and exotics. It’s when a mixture of metals is placed under intense heat and pressure and out comes a beautiful wheel, like a diamond.

And like a diamond, a forged wheel is strong. One of the strongest wheels you can get. And they’re lightweight which makes it perfect for racing. (Or in this case, off-roading.) Regrettably, that bead-lock ring is fake – purely aesthetic, nonfunctional. I really wish manufacturers would stop doing that.
