Will a Tonneau Cover from a Chevy Fit a Dodge?

Will a Tonneau Cover from a Chevy Fit a Dodge

Tonneau covers or truck bed covers are great when you want to prevent prying eyes from filching the contents in the bed of your truck.

They can also help increase your truck’s fuel economy by limiting drag. And they can protect the items in the bed from weather.

But a tonneau cover made for one truck won’t fit on another.

Specifically, a Chevy tonneau cover won’t fit a Dodge truck for reasons we’re going to get into.

We’ll also talk about how to get the right tonneau cover for your truck. As well as things you probably should and should not do with your tonneau cover.

1. All Tonneau Covers Don’t Fit All Trucks

That’s because all truck beds are designed differently with different sizes, shapes and construction.

Trucks are primarily designed for work and the size of the bed helps you get jobs done easier. Here are the different types of truck beds:

Short Bed

This type of bed is common on compact trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado and Ford Ranger. They’re usually 5.5 to 5.8 feet long.

Standard Short Bed

While still considered short, these beds are longer short beds. You can find them on single- and crew-cab trucks with half or suicide doors.

As well as full sized trucks, like the Chevy Silverado and Ford F-150. Standard short beds measure 6.5 to 7 feet long.

Standard Long Bed

These beds add about a foot or two to the size of a standard short bed. A long bed on a compact truck like a GMC Canyon will be about seven feet long.

While on a full-size truck like a RAM 1500 you’re looking at about an eight-foot-long bed.

Stepside Bed (Flareside Bed)

I’m one of those people that loves trucks but don’t have a practical need for them. And for that reason, a truck with a stepside always appeals to me.

Similar in length to a short bed, flareside beds have a step located just behind the cab of a truck to help you hop into the bed.

2. Tonneau Covers Are Not Universal

Given the different types of truck beds and their sizes, these are just some of the reasons why a tonneau cover from a Chevy won’t fit a Dodge truck.

Tonneau covers are not universal.

Different tonneau covers are designed for different truck beds and different models within that brand which all have different dimensions.

While tonneau covers aren’t interchangeable, the good news is that there are many tonneau cover manufacturers that design covers for a huge range of trucks down to the exact year, make and model.

So, you’re sure to find one that fits the bed of your truck like a glove.

3. The Way to Tell if Your Tonneau Cover Will Fit

I’m sorry ladies and gentlemen, there’s no easy way around this.

You’re going to have to break out a ruler and measure the bed of your truck to find the right tonneau cover size.

4. How to Measure Your Truck for a Tonneau Cover

The best tonneau cover for the bed of your truck will fit tightly and securely. And for that you’ll need accurate measurements.

  • You’ll need measuring tape.
  • Then you’ll need to lower the tail gate on your truck.
  • Next, measure the bed of the truck from the tail gate to the bulkhead which is behind the cab of the truck.
  • You’ll want to take the measurement at the end of the bed where the gap is.

Most tonneau covers are measured in feet.

Manufacturers usually round up the length of the tonneau cover to an even number.

It’s fine if your measurement isn’t an exact match when you’re shopping for a tonneau cover.

If you can’t measure the bed of your truck, you might be able to find the measurement for the bed in the owner’s manual which can be found online.

5. Tonneau Covers and Gas Mileage

Even if you’re not worried about your stuff getting stolen.

One of the other great things about tonneau covers is that they help improve your truck’s gas mileage.

And less face it, anything that can help increase MPGs in this day and age is a welcome advantage.

Adding a tonneau cover to the bed of your truck changes the way air flows over the cab and across the bed.

This helps improve aerodynamics and subsequently fuel economy – marginally at least. Those who have used a tonneau cover have witnessed a 1.8% increase in fuel economy.

6. Best Tonneau Cover for Your RAM 1500

The RAM 1500 is one of the most popular trucks on the market.

When it comes to luxury and comfort, it beats similarly configured Ford and Chevy trucks – my wife wants the Rebel TRX which is based on the RAM 1500, for instance.

7. Walking on a Tonneau Cover

Generally, a tonneau cover won’t support your weight.

Even though retractable tonneau covers offer some rigidity, they’re still not made to withstand the weight of a person.

That said, there are some tonneau covers you can stand on:

Hard One-Piece Tonneau Covers

Built with high-quality materials, these sturdy and durable tonneau covers are built to support your weight.

They’re usually made of polypropylene, fiberglass or aluminum.

Hard Rectractable Tonneau Covers

Even though they retract into themselves which suggests the use of softer materials. They’re actually made of the same durable stuff as the hard one pieces.

Hard Folding Tonneau Covers

Since these tonneau covers need weight to be evenly distributed, they’re not the most ideal for standing.

Standing on them can damage the support that allows the cover to fold. (Off the record: you can stand on them but be careful.)

8. Tonneau Cover Rolled Up or Pulled Down?

If there’s no good reason for your tonneau cover to be open, that is you’re not transporting anything that would require it to be open.

Then go ahead and close your tonneau cover.

Because even though the tonneau cover is designed to brave the elements.

Leaving it rolled up exposes the interior materials to damage that will affect its longevity.

9. Going Through a Car Wash with a Tonneau Cover

Would I put a Lamborghini through an automatic car wash? Of course not, don’t be silly.

But for a daily commuter like my wife’s and my Ford Fiesta, a touchless car wash is fast, convenient and affordable.

In like manner going through a car wash is super convenient for a utility vehicle as large as a truck.

But should you run a truck with a tonneau cover through an automatic car wash?

Ideally, you’ll want to remove the tonneau cover from the bed of your truck before going through a car wash.

But that’s not always practical.

So, if you are going to use an automatic car wash, you’ll want to avoid the spinning brushes which can dislodge the clamps holding the cover in place.

Touch free automatic car washes are going to be your best option.
